Overseas landlords still investing in UK property

Ludlowthompson said that since the EU referendum, the number of foreign landlords in the UK has increased by 19%, taking the current total to some 184,000.

The lettings agency estimates that despite Brexit, the pandemic and tax changes, the number of overseas landlords who own property in the UK has reached a 5-year-high.

In recent years, the favourable exchange rate following the fall of the pound seriously stimulated many buyers. Today, however, sees the start of a 2% stamp duty surcharge on most overseas investors buying in the UK, but the agency insists that is unlikely to be a significant deterrent.

There has been an increase in the number of Hong Kong buyers of UK property in recent years, the agency said that this number will increase after the introduction of new visas for Hong Kong British National Overseas Passport holders.

Another key attraction is education, many overseas landlords have purchased property to provide accommodation for their children who were studying in the UK.
