Merton council has prosecuted a landlord for renting out an unauthorized House in Multiple Occupation in Mitcham.
Daniella Mbachu was found guilty of failing to apply for an HMO licence from Merton council, as well as failure to supply a fire alarm, CO2 extinguisher, fire blanket, and fire escape.
As a result, she has been ordered to pay a total of £16,520 – £13,800 in fines, prosecution costs of £2,530, and a £190 victim surcharge.
A council spokesperson said: “Letting out a property cannot be seen as just a quick way of generating profit, landlords have a responsibility to their tenants, and we will hold them to account if they let them down… those who break the rules and put tenants at risk will face the consequences.”
