A landlord has been sentenced to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years for catastrophic breaches of fire safety legislation.
The owner and landlord of flats in Derby, Thirunavukkaradu Kuladaisamy, has also been fined a total of £50k, ordered to pay court costs of £23k and an additional £156 as a victim surcharge for breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
When firefighters were called to a fire in flats in November 2019, they discovered fire doors without self-closers or smoke seals, a kitchen door that didn’t close due to a lack of maintenance, and a fire alarm that was not working. In addition, there was no evidence of a fire risk assessment and the fire extinguishers were out of date.
