After a bedroom fire showed that tenants were living in unsafe housing conditions, the landlord was ordered to pay thousands of pounds.
In the early morning of October 8 last year, the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service received an alarm when a fire broke out in a bedroom on the first floor.
Eight people were believed to be living in the four-bedroomed semi-detached house in Slough where each room had been turned into a bedroom.
The electrical fire caused serious damage to the room and other areas of the house, and the council’s housing regulation officers were called in to investigate the living conditions.
Investigations revealed that the house’s fire safety measures were inadequate, including the lack of fire alarms and the lack of physical protection such as fire doors.
It also lacks other safety features, and there was no safety certification for gas and electric systems.
The HMO was not registered with the council and did not have any of the legally required licences.
Landlord Nadeem Khan admitted five offences under the Housing Act 2004 during an appearance at Reading Magistrates’ Court.
Khan was fined a total of £900 and ordered to pay £3,000 costs and £90 victim surcharge.
